I spent a long weekend painting in the Normandy countryside at another artist’s garden. This autumnal plant called sedum spectabili was a moment of joy because I had never seen so many varieties of butterflies on one plant. I was struck by this charming species that glowed in the fading sunshine as it perched on the luminous pink blossom.
I know that when one is surrounded by butterflies, it is very auspicious. In China, they represent a healthy life and in Japan , marital bliss. Here in Europe , they are regarded as symbols of hope and joy.
